Lithuania’s future was uncertain in the later 80’s to early 90’s. Many feared that Lithuanian traditions, language and heritage may disappear. However, Birute Bublys was already thinking of a way to keep future generations connected with their ancestor’s homeland.
Birute realized that through her outgoing personality and regular travels to Lithuania she had made personal connections that were willing to help her create an internship program. Three medical students spent their summer in Lithuania, and through Birute’s connections were able to volunteer in a hospital and local orphanage. As word began to spread through Lithuanian communities in the US and Canada, more students wanted Birute’s help to delve into such beneficial opportunities.
With the help of the Lithuanian-American Community, Inc. LISS was officially established in 2008. LISS makes it possible for students with all majors to have an opportunity to intern in Lithuania. LISS students are no longer tourists, but locals living daily life.
With such a big heart, Birute was dubbed as “Mama Bubs”—a kind, ambitious spirit who loved her students as if they were her own children. She gave her students the determination to reach their full potential, and never stopped trying to help them. Although God called Mama Bubs to her final resting place in heaven on August 18, 2010, her spirit and soul will continue to thrive in every LISS student.
The Birutes LISS Fund continues Birute’s dreams by helping those who need financial aid for the internship of which they want to be a part. Those who would like to contribute or receive financial aid forms, please email LISSprograma@gmail.com.
